Quite awhile ago I posted about cloth diapering and what was working for us then. I've changed our wash routine, got Nathan and Miriam out of diapers, and cloth diapered Levi since birth...so I think its time for an update!
I do cloth diaper at night and out and about now. The occasional box of diapers comes in, like on a recent week long trip, but now that I'm down to diapering one again, it isn't too hard in comparison to stick to almost exclusive cloth. And I found that I don't have the self control to use them only for outings/weekends/overnight so it's best for me just to use cloth almost always.
A very sweet friend passed on her cloth diaper stash to me, which included some super cute WAHM diapers...those are some of my favorites right now! Most of those I can't identify, so no links, sorry. I also love the medium Fuzzi Bunz I have.
I also use fitted diapers, or prefolds with a Snappi. I started my cloth diapering journey using pins and plastic pants, and honestly I don't like either. Thirsties are much easier for a dirty diapers, since plastic pants have to be pulled off over the legs, also, plastic pants are not adjustable. As well, Thirsties covers have leg gussets, which REALLY cut down on leaks! I have the medium size. They are a lot cheaper than Fuzzi Bunz, for sure, and if I had known how easy to use they were, especially with the Snappi or with fitted diapers, I might have just purchased them instead right from the start.
As far as washing, it is really simple. I'll shake dirty toddler diapers out into the toilet, but baby diapers and wet diapers go straight into a dry pail. When I'm ready to wash, I shake the liners out of the diapers, and fold the velcro over on the Thirsties. Then I run a cold rinse and a warm or hot wash, then another cold rinse. When I wrote my last post, I was using soap nuts, however I realized that with our extremely hard water, they were causing buildup on the PUL fabric on some of my diapers. I bought a box of Ecos from Amazon and have been very happy with it both for diapers and for the rest of our laundry.
So... that's my update! Any questions? If you cloth diaper, what are your favorite diapers?

I used old school cloth diapers (w/ plastic covers using Snappis, free from Aimee) with Kale'a when at home or short trips. She gets bad diaper rash when teething so then it's disposable. Also, while 9 months pregnant and with newborn doing disposable to keep some sanity. Hope to potty train K soon and put Titus in cloth. Wish I could get the nice cloth kind but can't justify getting rid of my free ones. :(
I use such an assortment thas been handed down to me along with some I've purchased myself. My favorite type of diaper is the prefold with a snap-closure cover. My kids rip the velcro covers right off! I cloth diapered two at the same time for only about 6 months but it was really no big deal. Two in diapers is going to be two in diapers no matter what you use! I use cloth exclusively excepting when we travel to my MIL's home b/c she has soft water and it is VERY hard to get the soap rinsed all the way out, or when we are staying overnight in a hotel. I've recently discovered lovelypocketdiapers.com. They are pocket diapers, but I use the isert as a booster and still put Ella Margaret in a prefold. The total cost of their diapers is $7/$7.50 for both the insert and the cover. Can't beat that! I was skeptical that they would be leak proof bc they are so cheap, but we've had no issues!
I love reading about other mamas' cloth diapering experiences! We've been CDing for over 2 years now and I have quite an assortment of types and brands, some purchased and some given to me. My faves are Smartipants (pocket diapers with openings at both ends so the inserts come out in the wash, yay!) and Thirsties snap covers with prefolds. I've only used Charlie's Soap with Biokleen Bac-Out and they seem to work well, although I have to do a series of hot water rinses once every couple of months when I notice the odor from buildup. I do use disposables at night and when we're going to be out of the house for several hours (like on Sundays.) I always feel like I'm throwing money out the window when I put a disposable on the kids, though, so it's not hard for me to stick with CDing most of the time! :)
Laura - I know that dilemma! I would love to splurge on some more medium Fuzzi Bunz or similar, but there isn't any good reason I can't use the fitted flannel diapers with Thirsties covers that I was gifted. I do think that my stash will need a few more nice pockets if it needs to go through another baby, though... after three, my medium Fuzzi Bunz elastics are just about shot & I'm not sure it's even worth all the effort to replace them. I want to try the Alva Baby diapers, they seem like a cheaper pocket that many people like pretty well...
Thanks for sharing, Sarah! I kind of enjoy the variety in our stash. Makes things interesting! ;) I hear you on the velcro! Especially in the summer, I like putting them in just a cute diaper and a tee shirt...Levi looooves losing the velcro diapers right away.
Oddly, I found two in cloth diapers to be easier in one way - I had enough for a load so fast that I wasn't running out of my favorites for each child and I didn't have to deal with stinky diapers that had sat in the pail! I am enjoying only diapering one right now though! ;)
Hi Abby! :) I keep thinking about trying Charlie's Soap, but I'm a little scared I won't like it and I'll have a giant bucket left. I haven't tried Bac-Out, but I did use some Rockin' Green on mine once and it made a big difference! I do have to say that the one really nice thing about prefolds is that I've never had any wash issues with them... always with my "fancier" diapers!
Good to read about your stashes! We hardly have one yet.. The 9mth old grew out of the bambino mio cloth and velco plasticky outer nappies at 6 mths but like Abby we love the Smartipants- we only have 4 but it's so easy and shake off poo in toilet and rinse. I wash with the other laundry at 40. They're soft and comfy and one size with poppers. I like the idea of all cloth wrapped diapers but haven't pursued it. I suppose I should choose outers and flushable liners- they're so great! But not great for water right... Hate buying disposable nappies but doing it more often argh!
